Dementia, Alzheimer’s, and Other Memory Problems
Forgetfulness is a normal part of the aging process. For many aging adults, misplacing things, forgetting names, and “senior moments” are just part of daily life. However, should you or your loved one’s forgetfulness be combined with other symptoms, such as the inability to complete simple tasks, problem solving, unexplained changes in mood and behavior, or other such symptoms, they may be suffering from a more serious form of memory impairment. Should you suspect that this is the case, it is best to visit the doctor to discuss symptoms and to decide if moving into an Angels Senior Living Memory Care facility would be the best choice.
What is Memory Care?
Residents suffering from Dementia or Alzheimer’s may find their needs are best serviced in specifically designed areas called Memory Care. Residents’ quality of life can drastically improve in Memory Care when the need is there due to these diseases. Specific interactive games and activities are performed daily to assist those that may struggle with other tasks. The physical construction of each Memory Care is designed with the resident’s safety and ability to operate independently in mind. This may include different paint schemes for areas or an opportunity to go outside in a safe environment.
Memory Care Versus Assisted Living
What is the difference between traditional care in an assisted living facility and specialized memory care? Memory Care is its own distinct form of long-term skilled nursing that was designed to cater to patients with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other memory or cognitive problems. These units provide supervised care all day, everyday in a separate wing or facility area. While assisted living is a great choice for you or your loved one as day-to-day tasks become more challenging, Memory Care offers a more residential solution. In addition to helping with the daily tasks, Memory Care staff members are specially trained to assist those with impaired cognition. The layout and physical attributes of the facility, including the security, of these facilities are also deigned to minimize wandering or problematic behaviors in an environment that is easily navigated. These areas are set up for safe engagement in meaningful activities to provide meaningful and joyful moments.
Dementia and Alzheimer’s are diseases that have sadly touched many lives. Families that bring their loved ones to our facilities are looking for help just as much as the person for whom they care. At Angels Senior Living, we enjoy taking the stress of great care off of family shoulders and bringing their loved one in to a facility that is both functionally sound and deeply caring. We practice validation therapy to keep residents that may be confused from feeling unnecessary stress. Oftentimes, residents in Memory Care revert to tasks they performed for years. We encourage this with calming activities such as folding clothes, assisting with “business” paperwork, and nurturing dolls.
